Interior Design Tips - How to Bedscape

Interior styling - not just for tables!

As a designer, I am used to observing the smallest of details and knowing when more, or less, is needed to finish a room or any surface my team and I style for our projects.  There are lots of tips and tricks to share that will elevate your bookshelves, consoles and coffee tables in a similar way, but today I wanted to talk beds.  Well, it’s bloody cold outside and I am writing this from under my duvet.  If there’s an upside to lockdown home working, I’ll find it!

More is more

It took a last-minute dash to a local store to get one more throw before we were truly happy with the final result in this image.  We’d planned this combination months earlier, with bespoke cushions and high street throws, and yet it needed something extra when it came to actually styling the bed.  It was the black and white throw you see in this photo that was added in the final hour.

If you took any two of the different items on this bed, they’d work together, but be a little ordinary.  It’s the total combination of colour, pattern and texture you see here that make it work so well.

Mix and Match

Here’s another bedscape from the same project in Oxford, where we’ve mixed more expensive bespoke cushions with a really inexpensive little Pompom one and textured throws.

You really don’t need to spend a lot of money on accessorising, in fact, a little money can go a long way to create this type of layering.  Buying in one place often won’t achieve as much interest as you see here; for example, I can count 4 different soft furnishing suppliers on both beds.

Inspiration

Pinterest is a great way to store ideas and online shopping finds.  If you want to build on your existing bed scene, you may have a couple of cushions already to get you going, start browsing the online home store websites and build different combinations of cushions, throws and even the odd patterned pillowcase to add to plain linen you may already have.

Where do do we find great cushions and throws?

There are so many great resources these days, a couple of our go-to for affordable styling supplies are Zara Home, H&M, Trouva and Etsy - we always find lots of loveliness to choose from that won’t break your budget.

So have a go!  Perk up your guest bedrooms and look at your own bedroom, does your bed say “Welcome, I am a cosy place to hang out”.  If it doesn’t, it needs to and layering a bit of colour, pattern and texture can do this for you.
